Last month, the
5th graders from Icard Elementary School had a unique opportunity to
attend Sound to Sea this year. Sound to Sea is a program which provides
students with the opportunity to learn about and directly interact with 5
very different ecosystems. Last month, These are the Maritime Forest, Pond, Beach,
Salt Marsh, and the Sound. Students learned about various organisms and
the adaptations that allow the organisms to live in their
habitats. Students wore waders and were able to go into
the Bogue Sound to collect and identify the organisms that may
live there. Using nets and screens, students collected a variety of
organisms from the pond as they learned about biodiversity and invasive
species. Through various group challenges, students learned to take risks
and work as a team. During the first evening class students learned
about the unique adaptations of birds of prey and the elements of motion and
design necessary for flight. The second evening class was
filled with suspense as students, teachers, and chaperones became a part
of the Underground Railroad. This simulation was a highlight of the
trip. Our trip concluded with a visit to the Pine Knoll Shores
Aquarium. There students did a scavenger hunt. They also learned
about sea turtles and were able to touch a live Loggerhead. This was a
field trip the students will never forget!
