On Wednesday, April 29, 2009,  Table Rock Middle School GEAR UP sponsored a college visit to Warren Wilson College located just minutes from the city of Asheville.  Warren Wilson provides a liberal arts education to students from all over the United States and other nations. The college is distinctive in that students combine studies with work and service to create a dynamic “Triad” in preparation for success in all aspects of the graduates’ lives.

Students of Mrs. Janie Perry (ELL/ESL) and Mr. Shannon Morris (Careers) experienced an extensive tour of the campus. The grounds reflect an environmentally conscious staff and student body.

Dr. Dean Kahl, chemistry professor, shared a demonstration of Newton’s Laws and two objects in motion. The demonstration was reflective of the scientific method at work and of inquiry based learning.  Students analyzed variables and evidence to explain their observations.

The 1998 Reauthorization of the Higher Education Act established the Gaining Early Awareness for Undergraduate Programs.  The goal of GEAR Up is to increase the number of students prepared to enter and succeed in high school and post secondary education through the use of partnerships between schools, colleges, universities, private sector and community organizations. A proposed 3,500 students will benefit from the GEAR Up Partnership in Avery County, Alleghany county, Burke County, Hickory Public Schools and Appalachian State University.
Table Rock and Johnson Middle Schools are fortunate to be a part of this project.  Phyllis Caldwell, a Burke County native, is the coordinator for Table Rock. Our school is glad to have Ms. Caldwell with us.
