2015-2016 Elementary Speech Contest

The 2015-16 Burke County Public Schools Elementary Speech Contest was held Wednesday, Dec. 16 at the Old Rock School in Valdese. School-level winners from all 15 elementary schools competed in the annual event. The four categories are Interpretative Prose, Interpretative Poetry, Original Composition and Notable Speeches. First-, second- and third-place winners were announced in each category at the district level. The winners are:

Interpretative Poetry
First - Sarah Mull, Rutherford College "Yertle the Turtle"
Second - Landon Cox, Drexel "The Creation"
Third -  Karsen Hallyburton, Salem "Mike Teavee"

Interpretative Prose
First - Joseph Franklin, Salem "Thoughts During a Boring Sermon"
Second - Lainey Stinson, Rutherford College "A Diva's Life"
Third - Coley Welch, Mull "What It Was, Was Football"

Original Composition
First - Courtney Buchanan, W.A. Young "Why Teachers Should Ban Homework"
Second - Gigi Smith, Rutherford College "Marcy the Marsupial"
Third - Emma Myers, Salem "The Best Job in the World"

Notable Speeches
First - Sara Byrd Succop, Rutherford College "Excerpt from Gov. Blanco's Address to the Louisiana State Legislature on the Catastrophe of Hurricane Katrina"
Second - Georgia Wood, Forest Hill "Our World"
Third - Joel Logan, Mountain Crest "Don't Give Up! ... Don't Ever Give Up!
