Annual backpack giveaway set for Aug. 20

posted Jul 11, 2016, 8:18 AM by Bcps Bcps

The Outreach Center, Burke County United Way and Walmart have once again teamed up to coordinate the distribution of backpacks and school supplies to Burke County students. Burke County Public Schools and area churches also will be a big part of the annual Build-A-Backpack Back-to-School Bash this year and organizers have added an additional distribution location. East Burke Middle School, at 3519 Miller Bridge Road, Connelly Springs, and The Outreach Center, at 510 E. Fleming Drive, Morganton, are both host sites for the Aug. 20, 2016 event. Families with children who pre-register for a backpack filled with school supplies can receive them between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Aug. 20. Haircuts, hotdogs, games and other attractions also will be available at both venues.

Dr. Holly Johnson, CEO of The Outreach Center, said, “We are very excited about our annual Build-A-Backpack Back-to-School Bash. The Outreach Center has been providing backpacks to Burke County school students for more than 10 years, and with the great collaboration with our partners Burke United Way, Walmart, and Burke County Public Schools, we look forward to this being the best event ever. It is such a blessing to see the children’s faces light up as they receive their backpacks and school supplies. It is heartwarming to know that you have a part in making a child’s life just a little easier.”

Chasity Poteat, executive director of Burke County United Way, said, “We would like to thank the residents and businesses of Burke County for their generosity in assisting with the collection of back-to-school supplies for the Build-A-Backpack program. With 30 percent of Burke County youth living in poverty, every donation to help a child succeed in the classroom will benefit their success as an adult. We are grateful to Walmart, The Outreach Center and Burke County Public Schools for the partnership, because we all know we can impact the lives of more children when we work together. Currently, 32 collection boxes have been distributed throughout Burke County, but we would love to have more. If you are interested in serving as a collection site, please contact BCUW at 433-0681. A complete list of collection sites are located on the BCUW website www.bcuw.org.”

Burke County Public Schools Superintendent Larry Putnam said, “The annual Build-a-Backpack Back-to-School Bash has become a wonderful tradition and a great way for our students to get ready for a new school year. We appreciate The Outreach Center, Burke County United Way and Walmart for all of their hard work over the years in organizing the bash, and we at Burke County Public Schools are excited to be on board as a partner this year. A new school year brings with it an air of excitement – from new outfits to new teachers, as well as the little things, such as new notebooks, pencils and backpacks. I know Burke County families involved in the Backpack Bash are so appreciative of the extra help so that their children have new school supplies, too.”

Registration forms can be found online at www.theoutreachcenter.org, and registration is open to all students living in Burke County. Each student who wishes to receive a backpack must be registered.
