East Burke and Freedom high schools’ FFA chapters participated in the NC FFA Poultry Evaluation Career Development Event on March 21 at the state fairgrounds.  East Burke team members were Andrew Brittain, Emily Griffith, McKayla Starnes and Savanna Hankins.  Freedom team members were Pate Pollard, Kenny Blanton, Kevin Beck and Casey Meldhal.  The advisors are Jessie Schermerhorn for East Burke and Dustin Haigler for Freedom. During the event, students evaluated production and processing and merchandising phases of the poultry industry as well as identified various industry components.  They also were tested on the application of sound management practices.  Students evaluated live birds, presented oral reasons and placed a class of ready-to-cook boilers. In the processing and merchandising phase of the event, students selected and graded ready-to-cook turkeys and processed products and cartons of eggs. Sponsors include Perdue Farms Inc. and the Prestage Department of Poultry Science at NC State University.  Freedom’s Pate Pollard had the 50th highest individual score in the state during the event.
