Employees cash in on opportunity for unclaimed money

Burke County Public Schools employees found a combined total of at least $2,000 in unclaimed money by visiting the N.C. Department of State Treasurer’s website and searching the NC Cash Program. Burke County Public Schools Superintendent encouraged employees to search the database when he learned his family was owed unclaimed cash.

The money in the NC Cash Program is from banks, employers, utility companies, insurance companies or stocks and bonds that has not found its way to its rightful owner. The website,
nctreasurer.com/claim-your-cash says, “Funds become unclaimed because the company loses track of the consumer, due to an incorrect address or other missing information.” By law, it is the State Treasurer who is responsible for receiving and keeping the money until consumers claims it.

Putnam said, “I told the employees this was an opportunity that they may have some money owed to them. This may not be the Powerball or a raise, but it could help.”

Nearly two dozen employees reported back to Putnam and Public Relations Officer Cheryl Shuffler that they visited the site and found unclaimed money either for themselves or a relative. While the majority of the claims were for $50 or less, several employees’ claims ranged from $160 to $481.19.
