Burke County middle school students who need extra help with a homework assignment or tutoring now have a free resource available to them. Through GEAR UP, sixth, seventh and eighth graders can use tutor.com for free. GEAR UP is the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs grant, which BCPS received through Appalachian State University.  GEAR UP encourages all students to set high expectations, stay in school, study hard and take the right courses to go to college. GEAR UP Coordinators Mandie Zarbano and Brandy Mills said the extra assistance tutor.com provides can help students stay on track with their education.

Mills said, “Tutor.com offers 24/7 access to a live, certified tutor in a variety of subjects (math, English, science, social studies and more). In addition to tutoring, students have access to practice quizzes to help them practice what they have learned.”

Mills explained that once students have logged into the site, the tutoring sessions are done through instant messaging. She said, “There are more than 3,100 tutors available, and they go through a rigorous background check, qualification and application process before they become tutors. No personal information is ever exchanged between the tutor and the student.”

Zarbano said, “The tutoring session can help students gain confidence in academic areas they may be struggling in. If they get it and can finish their assignment, they will be better prepared for class and that will reflect in their grades.”

Mills and Zarbano shared quotes from Burke County students who used the tutoring resource in September. They include:

·       “…I was struggling a little bit but now I completely understand it.”

·       “I like this because I sometimes need help on my homework and I can just come here.”

·       “My tutor was awesome and patient. This is my first time and she made it easy!”

Tutor.com offers assistance in more than 30 subjects as well as in honors and college-level classes and test prep for the ACT and SAT.

The web address is www.tutor.com/appstate. The username is the student’s Power School ID and the password is gearup. Once the student is logged in, he or she chooses the subject and is connected with a tutor.
