Middle School Speech Contest

    Burke County Public Schools held the Middle School Speech Contest on Dec. 17 at the Old Rock School in Valdese. School-level winners from all five middle schools competed in the annual event. The five categories are Interpretative Prose, Interpretative Poetry, Original Oratory, Recited Oratory and Interpretative Duo. First-, second- and third-place winners were announced in each category at the district level. The winners are:

Interpretative Poetry
First -  Clara Hawn, Walter Johnson "Goldie Pinklesweet"
Second - Hannah Payne, Liberty "Casey at the Bat"
Third - Ethany Payne, Liberty "The Christmas Guest"



Interpretative Prose
First - Luke Elliott, East Burke "What It Was, Was Football" 
Second - Graleigh Hildebran, East Burke "A New Bull" 
Third - Lillie Williams, Heritage "When You Are Three" 

Original Oratory
First - Brody Wright, Heritage "Boston Birthday Bellyache" 
Second - Grace Norris, Heritage "Our Generation"
Third - Sully Styles, Liberty "Rambling" 

Recited Oratory
First - Dorian Gregory, Liberty "FDR Speech to Congress: A Date in Infamy" 
Second - Nicholas Corn, Walter Johnson "The Invasion of Normandy Speech" 
Third - Jake Crawford, Table Rock "Room of Dreams" 

Interpretative Duo
First - Jessica Brittain and Ellie Fite, East Burke "Sister Act" 
Second - Taylor Hensley and Calli Westra, Liberty "Party On" 
Third - Sarah Grace Lockee and Gracie Ruff, East Burke "A Fine Line"
