College Street
Academy .. 2008 – beyond……. an Introduction
(Formerly Burke Alternative School,
1991 - 2008)
Written by: Teresa P. DeHart, Principal
College Street Academy is located five blocks from the center of
downtown Morganton, North Carolina at the corner of College and
Herron Streets. The facility was built in 1949 and
originally housed the students of Morganton Jr. High School. In
1951, a two story addition was completed with a 2nd floor
band room (for Morganton High School band classes) and a first floor
cafeteria (now called “The Bistro” – a beautifully decorated and
esthetically pleasing “restaurant” type seating area!)
College Street Academy
and its students occupy the second floor of the building. Our
facility is shared with the following Burke County Public School
Departments and related personnel: Public Relations, Career and
Technical Education, PreK Services & Family Connections, Grant
Program Manager, and WIA Program.
Additionally, a fully equipped industrial/restaurant style kitchen
is located on the first floor to provide a state of the art
“classroom” for the county’s high school culinary arts students. On
any given day, this facility is a hub of activity representative of
the many facets of Burke County Public Schooling at its best!
Daily, our school simultaneously operates two programs: the
academy program
(formerly called the drop out program -- designed for students who
have “dropped out” of high school and re-enter public school to earn
graduation credits/diploma) and the alternative program
(disciplinary Gr. 7-12 student placements by principal referral from
Freedom & Patton High Schools and Johnson, Liberty & Table Rock
Middle Schools). Students must participate in a required on-site
intake meeting with their parents before enrollment is finalized in
either program.
Our staff is encouraged to
“step out of the box” and use nontraditional methods to address
students’ interests, learning styles, and behaviors while
simultaneously teaching social competencies for not only school but
home, community, and the workplace. All courses are aligned with
the NC Standard Course of Study. While maintaining both a middle
and high school schedule with block scheduling, our students are
provided accommodating learning opportunities within smaller class
settings. Our disciplinary rules are in compliance with the BCPS
Student Code of Conduct. In other words, we are not flexible in our
expectations for discipline, but flexible in regards to curricular
programming.
I welcome you to visit us.
Volunteer and/or mentor a student, if possible. As a stakeholder in
the educational community, your input is valued. Take time to make
a difference for one of our students. That’s what College Street
Academy is about – making a difference – one student at a time.
