Spring 2018 - Biomedical Engineering

The STEAM Unit 3 - Bio Medical Engineering begins today.  Students from Drexel Elementary visiting via Facetime with Biomedical Technologist, Tod Chappell at Tufts University.  The room is set up as a lab complete with microscopes (thank you WJMS).

Students will be:
  • Viewing different human tissues and cells on the slides.
  • Abstracting their own DNA and placing it in a unique necklace to take home (thank you Dr. Carol Moore and STEM West).
  • Casting ears and noses from 3 D forms (thank you Wayne Whaley)
  • Making holograms by using the ipads and an app to project the beating human heart.
  • Learning about Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine - 3 D printers are now using tissue cells to grow ears, noses and organs!  http://www.wakehealth.edu/WFIRM/
  • The unit will be in the google classroom and canvas so the students can continue further research own their own after they leave the lab.
  • Interacting with Mr. Todd Chappell, a Ph. D student at Tufts University in Medford Massachusetts.  Todd will walk them through his lab and explain how he is working with cells, tissues, genes, and skin to help discover a healing agent for burn victims and patients with diabetes. (Videoing the face time segment this morning so all students can view in the following weeks.)
Most recently several BCPS graduates have been accepted into bio medical schools throughout the state and nation.  Please stop in and take a look at what the kids are creating and designing.

 July 8th to 14th
Clemson University will host the Clemson Career Workshop for rising high school seniors
The goal of the camp is to support the readiness of high-achieving students from diverse backgrounds to enter college. Campers will be exposed to subjects that may not be taught in high school, which can help instill confidence in the task of choosing a major. The camp is STEM-focused, but students will also be exposed to areas in humanities and social sciences.  -Click Here-
