  • The STEAM Academy is Abuzz this Semester as Elementary and Middle Schoolers Delve into the Study of Honeybees     The STEAM academy is abuzz this semester as elementary and middle schoolers delve into the study of honeybees. Through field trips to Western Piedmont Community College, the new home of STEAM, the third- through eighth-grade Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AIG) students are learning the role of honeybees in today’s world.    Students act as apiary researchers and take on the task of answering inquiry-based questions. Their mission is to work as a colony by gathering data, reflecting, sharing and organizing information about the roles of honeybees. As apiary researchers, students explore how each job affects the colony. When research is complete, students creatively present their findings to the STEAM “colony” through various methods of delivery, including using iPad ...
