The STEAM Academy is Abuzz this Semester as Elementary and Middle Schoolers Delve into the Study of Honeybees
Students act as apiary researchers and take on the task of answering inquiry-based questions. Their mission is to work as a colony by gathering data, reflecting, sharing and organizing information about the roles of honeybees. As apiary researchers, students explore how each job affects the colony. When research is complete, students creatively present their findings to the STEAM “colony” through various methods of delivery, including using iPad apps, conducting a debate or performing a skit or dance.
The honeybee unit is an example for how Burke County Public Schools AIG specialists develop advanced lessons at the STEAM Academy for all AIG students three times a year. The lessons are inquiry based and utilize critical-thinking skills, problem-solving skills and student collaboration while incorporating technology.
The AIG specialists play a vital role within the school system. They serve both teachers and students by modeling differentiated lessons and providing an advanced curriculum with methods of implementation. The specialists also provide teachers with training and planning support based on teachers’ needs to help foster the nurturing process. The AIG specialists remain current on trends and provide resource materials and on-line websites to assist the teacher with instruction.
Twice a year (fall and spring), the AIG department screens and tests potential AIG students within the county based on parent/teacher.
The Burke County Public Schools’ Gifted Education Program strives to be a model of exemplary education, inspiring gifted students to reach and exceed their academic and intellectual potential. Students will be prepared for the challenges of the 21st Century while contributing to their global community as productive citizens.
The testing program provides resources for the developmental needs of students. Students who qualify are placed in AIG classes upon verification of the test results.
