In 1963, Harvey Ball created the smiley face that is the most recognized symbol of good will and cheer. After many years he became concerned that the original intent of the symbol had lost meaning in today's society. Therefore, in 1999, Mr. Ball declared the first Friday of October each year to be recognized as World Smile Day. The motto for the day is "Do an act of kindness. Help one person smile!"
