Fourth Grade to Raleigh

Fifth Grade Trip to Camp Thunderbird!

We went on a history walk back in time to the early 1800s. We were divided into families. We met a hunter who talked to us about how he would have lived and what he would have hunted. He met us with his rifle (fake) because we were trespassing. He then talked cautiously :) about how to load his gun and his life in the early 1800s.

We also met a teacher, Miss Elizabeth Banks in our travels. She was very strict and expected students to sit up straight and be enthusiastic about their studies. Students who misbehaved had to stick their nose to a tree.  She carried a large stick with which she would rap the knuckles of unruly, disrespectful students.

FHES Students are studying art and painting their own 12x12 canvas thanks to a Grant from the Morganton Service League!

 Happenings Around Our School

Do you hear that beat….it’s the sound of 5th grade chorus performing “The Broadway Beat”. On Friday, April 19, 2013, chorus presented a show of Broadway favorites from musicals like The King and I, Rent, Hairspray, Grease and others. Audience members enjoyed the tunes and learned fun facts about the famous street in New York City called Broadway!

 School Essay Contest

In Mrs. Davis’ technology classes each student is given the opportunity to participate in the writing contest.  Utilizing their typing skills the students receive a monthly prompt to write a 200 word essay.  The essays are then sent to East Burke High School where Mrs. Emily Church’s 10th grade students read, evaluate the stories and select best essays.  This program is a collaborative effort between the high and elementary students.  The winners of this month’s contest were rewarded with an ice cream Sunday party on Friday April 19, 2013.  In an effort to motivate all students to enjoy reading and writing, the stories are then placed in the Forest Hill media center.  The second Creative Writing Prompts contest winners are listed below.
