GREAT SAVINGS!
Over 6 months ago our school system, facing drastic layoffs and
salary cuts, made a renewed commitment to save resources by
reducing wasted energy in our buildings. After the School Board
unanimously approved our new Energy Management Program, we
set up a “Campus Energy Team” and learned some great new ways
to save energy. Over the first five months of the program (from June
through October 2009), Liberty Middle/North Liberty saved over:
¨ 240,150 KiloWatt-Hours of electricity (enough to power 44
homes!)
¨ 160,600 cubic feet of natural gas
By saving this much energy, we reduced our school utility bills by
25.70%. This adds up to $21,277 we avoided paying the utility
company! It’s money we are using to “keep our cash in the
classroom” and help save teachers’ jobs!
Saving this much energy also helps Liberty Middle/North Liberty save
our planet! The US Environmental Protection Agency estimates we
reduced our “carbon footprint” by 155 metric tons of CO2 in the last 5
months. That’s the same as planting over 83 acres of trees or
keeping 40 cars off the road for one year!
These results required the help of every person in our school. We
are proud to be “doing the right thing” for our children by conserving
their natural resources, and by saving money for our school!
