MOUNTAINCREST ELEMENTARY SCHOOL RECEIVES LOWE’S GRANT

FOR “GOING GREEN”

[Morganton, NC] – Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation has awarded a $4,920.00 Toolbox for Education grant to Mountain Crest Elementary School in Morganton, North Carolina for outdoor garden boxes, an outdoor science center, bicycle racks, and a bicycle rodeo. Mountain Crest Elementary School is one of more than 585 schools or parent organizations to be awarded a Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grant for parent-initiated school improvement projects benefiting K-12 public education across the United States during the 2010-2011 school year.

Raised garden beds will be built and students will work to plant, maintain, and harvest several types of vegetables. Cement tables and other necessary equipment will be purchased so student groups can conduct science activities outdoors. Bicycle racks will be installed outside the building to allow students who live close to park their bikes safely outside our school building. School leaders and interested parents will also be organizing a bicycle rodeo to teach and encourage bicycle safety. The project is scheduled to be completed in Fall of 2012.

Launched in partnership with PTO Today, a leading organization serving parent-teacher groups, the Toolbox for Education program has provided nearly $30 million through more than 6,000 grants since its inception in 2006. The grants have affected more than 3.7 million schoolchildren. Grants are available to public schools in the United States for a wide range of improvement projects and large schools or school districts may be eligible to receive Toolbox grants up to $100,000 for school improvement initiatives.
