North Carolina Supreme Court Associate Justice Paul Newby addressed Civics and US History Students from Freedom and Patton High schools on Tuesday January 31st in the Patton High School auditorium. Justice Newby has been on the high court since 2004 and has been active in speaking with school groups for many years. Justice Newby spoke with the assembled students on the path that he has taken to get to the Supreme Court and the value of the law in our democratic society. Newby also spoke about the consequences of decision-making and how decisions can impact their futures. He used real case history to illustrate the dangers of how drinking and driving, drug use, and other poor decisions have impacted the lives of young people in the state of North Carolina. Students were also given the opportunity to hear actual case studies and decide themselves how to judge the outcome before hearing the actual verdict in the case. Students were encouraged to pursue a career in the judicial system by Newby, who told the assembled body "it wasn't that long that I was sitting right where you are now..."
