Salem's Archery Team Places First in the State

Salem Elementary School’s Archery Team #1 received first place in the Elementary Division at the National Archery Schools Program State Tournament for North Carolina. Our team will be representing NC in the National Archery Tournament in Louisville, KY May 11-12th. The archers competed against other participating elementary schools from various parts of NC in a virtual tournament.

An NASP archery team must be organized of at least 16 and not exceed 24 members. Also, an elementary team must consist of at least 5 members of the opposite gender. Mr. Mike Steele, physical education teacher and sponsor of the team, recruited 40 team members this season, which were divided into 2 teams. A team must place 1st in the state as a team to proceed to the National Archery Tournament or individuals that place 1st-5th individually by gender may also proceed to the National Tournament. Congratulations athletes, we are so proud of you!

Students Complete Interviewing Project

Third grade students in Mrs. Stephanie Cook’s class recently completed a unit of study involving speaking, listening and writing skills.  Students prepared questions and interviewed other students and an adult outside the classroom.  The student interview was converted into dialogue and then a biography.  Students also wrote an autobiography.  As a culminating activity, students integrated technology by Skyping from their classroom at Salem with Mrs. Kim Rudisill, the BCPS Directory of Elementary Education.

Mrs. Alexander's Second Grade Class Competes in Battle of the Books Competition

Mrs. Angie Alexander’s second grade class recently participated in a virtual Battle of the Books competition with Mrs. Holly Ramsey’s class at Chesterfield Elementary School.  Using webcams connected to their classroom computers, and Skype, video conferencing software, students were able to compete against their peers at another school.  Both classrooms worked very hard to prepare for the competition and we are all proud of their efforts!
