Recycling Project a Huge Success

Salem just completed our annual aluminum can recycling drive. We collected over 1,600 pounds of aluminum cans and earned over $800.00 in just one month! The children were rewarded with ice cream and pizza for their participation.  Thanks to the recycling club and PTO for their help with this project!  The entire school participated in this event and a portion of these funds will be divided between Burke Co. Friends for Animals and Salem's 4-H Gardening Club.

American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life Burke County 2014

May 9-10, 2014 at Freedom High School

Hope lights the way! Please consider purchasing a Luminaire for our annual Relay For Life walk.  Luminaire, with honorees’ names, prominently displayed on white bags will provide glowing inspiration throughout the night as they light the path around the track for Relay participants. These Lights of Love will serve as a reminder that cancer has touched so many families in our community.  Please download form to participate.

 In Our Classrooms

Beekeepers Visit Salem

Mrs. Cindy Roscoe’s fifth grade class recently enjoyed a presentation from beekeepers, Howard Recis and Nancy Lail.  Students learned about the important role honey bees play in pollination of flowers, fruits and vegetables and the delicious commodities they produce.  Thank you Mr. Recis and Ms. Lail for sharing your knowledge and expertise with our students.

Mrs. Acord's Class Wax Museum

Famous North Carolinians came to life in the media center at Salem on Friday, March 21st!  Students in Mrs. Acord’s 4th grade reading class created a wax museum as a culminating activity for a research project.  Each student wrote a research paper and created a virtual museum using their laptop computers, then gathered artifacts related to their person, and dressed in character for the event.  Students and parents visited the wax museum and were able to talk to each character and learn more about important people from our state.
