Read Across America Balloons Found!!
We released our balloons around 2:15 on Friday, March 2nd. We didn't know where they would land and who we would hear from in response to finding the balloons. However, Mr. Smith received an email on Saturday, March 3rd from someone who found some of our balloons. Below is a portion of the email:
Dear Students and Teachers of Valdese Elementary,
My name is David Libby and I work as a patrol officer in Yorktown, Virginia. On March 2nd at 10:00pm, I received a call from my sergeant that some object had landed in the middle of the road. I responded to the location and to my surprise found your balloons! I returned with the balloons to our office and read the cards attached. Using my GPS device, I was astounded to find that these balloons traveled over 367 miles from your school in Valdese to my location in Yorktown, VA. I contacted your principal about our discovery. He informed me that the balloons were released around 2:30pm that same day! Using a little bit of math, it appears that the balloons traveled at a rate of 48.7 mph on their journey to historical Yorktown. One of my coworkers would like to challenge you to learn a little bit about Yorktown, VA and study its rich history. On behalf of all of the officers working here, we wish all of the students and staff a hardy hello and that we have sent donations your way to help buy books for your library!
Wow! Was that amazing or what?

Read Across America Celebration
On Friday, March 2nd, our school had our "Read Across America" celebration! Our day began with volunteers from our school system and community reading to each of our homeroom classes. Our students enjoyed this tremendously! At lunch, students had Dr. Seuss birthday cake. Who doesn't love cake? At the end of the day, the faculty put on a special skit based on the book, Click, Clack, Moo, Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin. The students then went up to the football field where we recited the Read Across America pledge and then released balloons to end our celebration. Each balloon had a tag on it about our school and we are anxiously waiting to hear from people that found the balloons!
Jump Rope for Heart
Results!
In our country heart diseases and stroke kill about 650 more people each day than all types of cancer put together. Valdese Elementary students raised $3,294.00 for this great cause!! One of our students raised $1,073.00! Awesome job!!
