 5th Graders Perform Science Raps

As a culminating activity for their study on forces and motion, fifth grade students in Mrs. St. Louis's science classes performed and recorded raps on Newton's three laws of motion. These raps were written and shared by Hillary Webb, a teacher at Forest Hill Elementary School. Click the links below to enjoy students’ terrific videos!

 What's Happening at VES

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After reading Sign of the Beaver, some of Mrs. Powell’s fifth graders created the “log cabin” Matt helped his father to build for their family as they would move from the home in Massachusetts to Maine.  Students were given the assignment which included suggestions for how to build the cabins.  The cabin had to be built according to the story.  The assignment required that the roof be removable to show the inside which also had to be according to the novel.  Students were allowed to work in small groups, in pairs, or as individuals.  Parents were encouraged to help with the design and construction.  Students had to be prepared to explain the natural resources and the capital resources used to complete the project.  Students were also asked to calculate the area and perimeter of the cabins to tie the project to math.  Of course, cutting the materials for construction included some measuring as well!  Since Matt had to spend months waiting for the arrival of his family, his survival was credited to the Beaver tribe, the Algonquin Indians that taught him the “Indian” way to live.  This was a direct correlation to what we have been studying in Social Studies this past nine weeks.  The students far exceeded Mrs. Powell’s expectations and all students were proud as projects were delivered to the school.  The cabins are on display in the Valdese Elementary Media Center.  Feel free to come by and step back in history!
 We Need Your Help at VES
 Volunteers Needed!
Attention, Volunteers!
We appreciate your help in our schools!  Without you, our students could not participate in some of the extra special activities that they currently enjoy.
We have a new procedure concerning volunteers and wanted to make you aware of it.  As of October 10th, volunteer applications must be completed and returned to the school 15 days prior to the activity or event that you would like to assist with.  This enables our Human Resources department to process your application in time for you to be a part of the particular event.  Volunteer applications are good for three years and should you currently have an approved application on file then it is not necessary to complete the new form.  The new applications are available at each school and can be found on the Burke County Public Schools website under the "Community" tab as "Volunteering in Burke County Public Schools."
Again, thank you for being a volunteer in our schools.
