Morganton, NC – Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2019

Burke County Public Schools held its sixth annual Souperintendent’s Souper Bowl Canned-Food Drive Jan. 3 through Feb. 8. The food drive collected 45,000 pounds of food this year, more than doubling last year’s collection totals. Collection barrels were placed at all 26 Burke County Public Schools campuses plus the Central Office, Olive Hill Resource Center and Auxiliary Services/Bus Garage.

Four local charities benefit from the food drive; they are Burke United Christian Ministries, East Burke Christian Ministries, Abernethy Memorial United Methodist Church in Rutherford College and East Burke High School’s own food pantry.

The school system’s food drive starts each year the week students return from Christmas break and runs until the week after the Super Bowl. Schools decorate their collection barrels and staff, students and the community are invited to fill them with non-perishable food items.

Burke County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Larry Putnam said, “I am so proud of our students and our schools for going above and beyond in participating in this canned food drive and giving back to the community. Sometimes we see those in need give the most and that truly warms my heart. We are fortunate to live in a generous community that takes care of those in need, and I am proud of the fact that we are teaching our students that it is never too early to get involved in philanthropy.”

Putnam started the food drive six years ago and since then, the school system has collected nearly 100,000 pounds of food for local food pantries.
