The Houses that Students Built

Burke County Public Schools high school students are building houses. Freedom and Patton students are constructing a house on the western end of the county on Boulder Drive in the Salem area, and East Burke and Draughn students are constructing a house in the eastern end of the county on Rodrick Street near Rutherford College. To celebrate the students’ work, Burke County Public Schools hosted a cookout for the students at the Boulder Drive location. The students were then bused to the Rodrick Street location, giving the students the chance to see each other’s work. The Boulder Drive home is nearly complete and the Rodrick Street home is under roof. The students started both projects by clearing the land, marking off the boundaries and constructing from the bottom up. Construction teachers from the high schools supervise the process and trade technicians are brought in to complete work such as plumbing and electrical. The houses will be available for sale to the public once complete and the profits will go back into the district’s construction program for future student-built homes.
