Burke County Public Schools is launching its seventh annual Souperintendent’s Souper Bowl Canned-Food Drive. Burke County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Larry Putnam, who first initiated the drive in 2014, said, “It is always exciting to flip the calendar to not only a new year but also a new decade. It also is exciting to continue familiar traditions, such as our annual food drive.”

The food drive has restocked the shelves of local food pantries with nearly 100,000 pounds of food over the past six years. The drive starts each year the week students return from Christmas break and runs until the week after the Super Bowl. Schools decorate their collection barrels and staff, students and the community are invited to fill them with non-perishable food items. The collection barrels for this year’s drive are being placed at all 26 Burke County Public Schools campuses plus the Central Office, Olive Hill Resource Center and Auxiliary Services/Bus Garage. The drive ends Feb. 7.

Putnam said, “We know the need in Burke County remains great. We can see it on the faces of the people in our community and unfortunately that need reaches into the lives of our students. I continue to be amazed at how giving our community is and how willing our school family is to be a part of that spirit of giving. Thank you in advance for your participation in this food drive and the example you set for our students as we teach them to be servant leaders.”

The Souperintendent’s Souper Bowl Canned-Food Drive is one of four campaigns Burke County Public Schools sponsors each school year. The others are United Way, Relay for Life and the Burke Education Foundation Golf Tournament.
