Burke County Public Schools and our high schools are excited for the opportunity that our basketball programs have to play this season. Though games will look very different this year as we strictly follow rules, regulations and guidelines set forth by the NC Governor’s Office and the NCHSAA related to COVID-19, we are grateful that our teams will be able to take to the court.

As you know, the NCHSAA basketball season starts this week and goes through Feb. 19. Here are a few things you need to know about the season and what to expect:

- Per Governor’s orders, only 25 fans will be allowed to attend each game.

- While we will miss the support and atmosphere of a gym packed with fans, we still want our players and cheerleaders to have the opportunity for at least one family member to be able to watch them in person during home games. Our individual schools have a plan for how passes will be handled for Varsity and JV games to adhere to the 25-fan limit.

- All attendees must wear a cloth face covering and practice social distancing.

- No tickets will be sold at the door and no spectators from the visiting teams will be allowed. The same will apply for when our teams travel to another school for a game; those schools will not allow visiting fans.

- Fans will only be allowed in designated seating areas.

- We will close the gyms in between games for a thorough cleaning before fans for the next game are allowed to enter.

- During the game, all players, coaches, referees and spectators will follow face covering guidelines and game balls will be cleaned on a regular schedule.

- All of our games will be streamed on our high schools individual YouTube Channels. We are working with the high schools on our away schedule to share their game streaming options as well.

We thank you for your support and understanding during this time of navigating a basketball season in the midst of this pandemic. We also thank you for realizing these policies and guidelines are given to us by state officials and must be followed for our teams to continue to meet NCHSAA eligibility. We are relying on you and your cooperation to help make our season successful. As a reminder, to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and for everyone’s health and safety, please continue to follow the 3 Ws: Wear a face covering. Wait and practice social distancing. Wash your hands thoroughly and often.
