Drexel Elementary School announced it will close after school today and reopen on Wednesday, Jan. 19. The closure is due to a high number of COVID-19 cases, isolations and quarantines.

Superintendent Dr. Mike Swan said, “The decision to close a school is not made lightly, but with so many student and staff absences and the difficulty in finding coverage to meet the needs of these students who are present, this is the best option. The two days coupled with Monday’s Martin Luther King Jr. holiday and Tuesday’s teacher workday will give our custodial team time to do a thorough cleaning of the building and give the school time for affected students and staff to come off of isolations and quarantines.”

Drexel parents were notified of the closure around 1:15 p.m. today. Remote learning will take place on Thursday and Friday for Drexel students as classroom teachers will work with students on accessing assignments over the next two days. Meals will be available for pick up on Thursday at the school between 10 and 11 a.m. Parents are asked to order by 8 a.m. Thursday by calling 437-6752, leaving a message and including the student’s name(s). The meals will include two breakfasts and two lunches.
Drexel’s daycare will be closed Thursday and Friday. The YMCA Schools Out Camp will plan to operate at the school on Monday and Tuesday for students who are well and not in quarantine.

The Burke County Health Department informed Burke County Public Schools on Monday of a cluster of COVID-19 positive cases at Drexel. The NC Department of Health and Human Services defines a cluster as a minimum of five confirmed diagnostic cases with illness onsets or initial positive results within a 14-day period and plausible epidemiologic linkage between cases. Eight of Drexel’s classrooms have had to close this week and as of Wednesday, nearly half of the school’s student and staff population were absent due to COVID.
