Morganton, NC – Tuesday, Oct 8, 2019

The outdoor, athletic tracks at Freedom and East Burke high schools will soon be revamped to have rubberized surfaces by the end of the school year.

The track at Freedom High School is currently being worked on and is set to be finished by the end of football season. The renovation of the track at East Burke High School is set to start after the end of football season and be complete before spring. Due to many years of wear and tear, the asphalt has and will be removed at both sites and be replaced with a brand new rubberized surface. This will be a new feature brought to the two high schools’ athletic and physical education programs. The eight-lane track will be accompanied by new surfaces for the high jump, long jump, triple jump and pole vault.

Casey Rogers, Freedom High School principal said, "We are really excited about the new rubber track going down here at FHS. BCPS is making a huge commitment to student safety and success with the new track. The new state-of-the-art surface will not only benefit our track athletes but it will provide a great training environment for all of our student athletes and PE classes. We look forward to hosting conference and non-conference track meets in the future as well as potentially hosting regional meets in the years to come."

Katie Moore, East Burke High School principal echoed the same sentiments as Rogers.

She said, “The anticipation of a new rubberized track at EBHS has everyone excited. Previously our track team was at a disadvantage, but this will allow our athletes to practice together on a track they normally compete on at other schools in the conference. With the improvements, EBHS will be able to host competitive track and field events on our campus utilizing our beautiful stadium and facilities. The new rubberized surface will also reduce impact-related injuries for our athletes and students.

Doug Setzer, director of auxiliary services, said “This will be a much better track where regional and conference meets can be held. This is top of the line.”

Superintendent Dr. Larry Putnam said, “This will be a great addition and update to two of our high schools. We are excited to see the completed tracks and what opportunities this will bring our students. A big thank you goes out to all those who have worked hard to make this new and improved track possible.”
