Morganton, NC – Friday, May 31, 2019

Burke County Public Schools has announced the locations of its annual summer feeding program: Mountain View Elementary School, 805 Bouchelle St., Morganton, and Valdese Elementary School, 298 Praley St., Valdese. Hot lunches will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Thursday, with the exception of Thursday, July 4, at each location. The summer feeding program starts June 10 and concludes Aug. 15. The meals are free to children ages 1 to 18. The cost is $3 for adults.

“Summer is a time for vacations, hanging out at the pool and not worrying about school and homework,” said Burke County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Larry Putnam. “But unfortunately when school is out, it also means some kids don’t get hot meals in the middle of the day. Many of our families struggle with putting food on the table and during the summer don’t have meals at school to rely on to help feed their kids. This program is wonderful in that it feeds children for free and adults for only a few bucks.”

Burke County Public Schools is able to offer the program through the federally funded, state administered No Kids Hungry Summer Food Service Program. In North Carolina last year the program was available at 3,000 sites across the state.

Burke County Public Schools and Chartwells, which manages school cafeterias, plan to feed 600 children each day this summer. That number includes summer school students, daycare students, athletes and, new this year, 40 children at a Morganton apartment complex. The hot meals will be delivered to the Stonebridge Apartments.

The feeding program follows USDA nutrition guidelines. Parents don’t need to apply to the program to get a free summer meal for their kids. They can just bring their child to Mountain View or Valdese. For daily menus, download the Nutrislice App or visit www.burke.k12.nc.us and click on “Menu” under the “Parents” tab.
