BOE Recognition of Nurses and Teacher

BOE Recognition: Jessica Thompson, Robin Smith and Lori Henry
Posted on 05/15/2019

On the morning of Feb. 13, 2019, a pre-kindergarten teacher, Jessica Thompson at Valdese Elementary School, and a nurse at a different elementary school, Lori Henry at Drexel, were reviewing the carbohydrate content of the day’s lunch menu. Both ladies are trained in diabetic care management and in helping students with calculating how much insulin should be given to help balance blood sugar levels. They use the Nutrislice App -- which details the nutritional value of foods served in our cafeterias, to determine insulin doses. On this particular day, they identified a concern with the spaghetti entrée as the app listed that it contained 135 grams of carbs. Henry checked with the diabetic students in her school and learned they did not have the spaghetti and it was not an issue. Meanwhile, Thompson notified the nurse at her school, Robin Smith, who in turn contacted our district lead nurse, Miranda Michaels. Michaels got child nutrition involved and it was determined that the app contained an error and the carb count should have been listed at 45 grams of carbs instead of 135 grams of carbs. All school nurses and diabetic care managers in the district were notified of the error. We are happy to report because of the vigilance of this prek teacher and school nurses, many of our diabetic students were kept safe from receiving an incorrect dose of insulin due to the error.  In addition, Chartwells has put in place new procedures to ensure carb counts are reviewed weekly and that that information is shared with school nurses to prevent future errors. The Burke County Board of Education recognized on Monday night Thompson, Smith and Henry for their efforts in putting students first.
