Burke County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Larry Putnam announced promotions within the school district and said he is excited about the changes these promotions will bring for the future of the school system.

Debbie Jennings, has been named director of Career and Technical Education (CTE). She currently fulfills a dual role of director of CTE and director of secondary education. As the director of CTE she will focus on working with Burke County Public Schools partners in education, such as Western Piedmont Community College and Burke Development, Inc. on developing a more educated workforce in Burke County.

Felicia Simmons, the principal of Freedom High School, is taking over one of the dual roles and has been named director of secondary education. Her role will be to oversee curriculum and instruction of the district’s middle and high schools.

Kathy Amos, director of Advanced Learning and Innovation and the principal of Burke Middle College, has been named superintendent of Yancey County Schools. Filling her vacancy will be Christie Abernathy, principal at Liberty Middle School.

Angie Hensley, food services management coordinator, has taken a position in the private sector. Daniel Wall, principal of Valdese Elementary School, is filling her position.

Putnam said, “Each year we anticipate many types of job related vacancies due to retirements, resignations, educational and maternity leaves. Since Burke County Public Schools attempts to promote qualified candidates from within, often there is a domino effect created.”

Putnam congratulates the employees in their new assignments and said, “I am confident each of these promotions will help our school system continue to grow and achieve academically. They will officially begin their new roles as of July 1, 2019.”

Putnam said he will announce future changes as soon as possible. He said, “I also want you to know that changes come about most often when individuals seek opportunities for advancement. While change is always hard, please know that I, like you, have the students' best interests at heart at all times. Again, I want to assure you that I will let you know which positive changes will occur as soon as I can.”
