Posted on 07/10/2019

The 14th annual Burke County Youth Band Camp will be held Monday, July 29 through Friday, Aug. 2, 2019 at Patton High School for rising sixth- through ninth-grade band students. This is a wonderful, fun enrichment for band students. The registration fee is $40 before July 22 and $50 afterward.

Below are some frequently asked questions about the camp:

Why should my child participate in the Burke County Youth Band Camp?

The BCYBC is in its 14th season and each year it gets bigger and better! The Beginning Camp gives rising 6th grade students the opportunity to get a head start on their instrument, meet new friends going to their school, and to have a great time playing their new instrument all week. The Advanced Camp gives rising 7th-9th grade students a chance to play in the summer with other students their age. It is also a great time for them to see friends they have made at other schools from events such as All-County Band.

Does my child need to know how to play an instrument to participate in the Beginning Camp?

No! We start from the very beginning of how to put together and hold an instrument to playing the first note.

How do I register my child for the camp?

Your middle school band director has registration forms available for you. They can also be found at the front desk at Patton High School. Or click here for a form. Fill out the forms and return them to your child’s band director or mail them along with the registration fee to: Patton High School Band, attention: Chad Higdon, 701 Enola Road, Morganton, NC 28655. Please make checks payable to Patton High School Band Booster.

Do I have to pre-register my child for the camp?

No, but it is encouraged. We accept all walk-ins on the first day of the camp, but they must register and pay the registration fee prior to starting camp.

What are the registration fees?

Registration fees are $40 if received before July 22nd. Walk-in and late registrations are $50. All checks should be made payable to “PHS Band Boosters.”

Once I register my child when will I hear from the camp staff?

Once your registration is received you will receive a confirmation email or phone call from our camp staff. You can always email the camp director, Chad Higdon ( Email will be the primary source of communication.

Is it all right if my child has to miss a day or two of camp?

Sure. We understand that parents and students may have prior commitments planned. It is all right if you need to miss a day of camp.

Who will supervise the students and their behavior?

The camp staff is comprised of Burke County band directors that will supervise the students from the time they arrive until when they are picked up in the afternoon. Students are expected to display appropriate behavior. If a student has a behavior issue, a conference will be set up with their parent/guardian the day it happens. The camp very rarely has any behavior problems and we pride ourselves on having some of the finest students.

Does my child need their own instrument for camp?

Yes. All students should have consulted with their middle school band directors about what instruments they have chosen. If a student is not able to obtain an instrument, he/she should contact their middle school director. There may be an instrument available for the student to borrow depending on what instrument the child has been assigned by their director. Instruments are available to rent at Music and Arts as well as other local music stores.

What does my child need to bring to camp?

Students need to bring their instrument, a pencil, and a GREAT ATTITUDE! All other materials will be provided. If students did not pre-register, a parent or guardian must fill out a registration form with medical information on the first day the student attends camp.
