Burke County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Larry Putnam announced Monday at the Burke County Board of Education meeting that after nearly 10 years as superintendent he is taking a position as executive vice president of Catawba Valley Community College. Putnam’s first day on his new job is May 1.

Putnam said at the board meeting, “For the past 10 years I have had the absolute privilege of serving as superintendent of Burke County Public Schools. During this time the BCPS faculty, staff administration, parents, students and school board members have all worked together to create a top-performing school system. This success did not happen by chance, but by intentional hard work by all of us. And I am reminded daily that we have committed teachers, committed support staff, committed administrators, all of whom are student centered. I will forever be grateful for the amazing opportunity to serve as superintendent of Burke County Public Schools. I am grateful for our Board of Education. I am thankful for the success that we have had together, and most importantly the wonderful friendships that I have made.”

Putnam later echoed those sentiments in an email to Burke County Public Schools employees, saying, “Please know that I am forever grateful to have had an opportunity to work alongside dedicated professionals like you through the years. Thank you for all that you do daily to serve the students and communities of Burke County.”

The Burke County Board of Education is working with the school board attorney on appointing an interim superintendent and starting the process of searching for a new superintendent. The next Board of Education meeting is Monday, March 15, 2021.
