Morganton, NC – Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2019

Burke County Public Schools will host two interest meetings for parents of rising kindergarten students who want more information about the Dual Language Immersion Program at Mountain View Elementary School. Interest meetings will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21 and 6 p.m. Thursday, March 7 in the Media Center at Mountain View, located at 805 Bouchelle St., Morganton.

The Global Immersion Academy teaches students English and Spanish starting in kindergarten with students following the program through the fifth grade at Mountain View. The program is currently in its first year at the new school.

Burke County Public Schools Director of Elementary Education Karen Auton explained the goals of the program are biliteracy, bilingualism, grade level academic achievement and cross cultural competence. Students in the Global Immersion Academy are taught the standard course of study in both English and Spanish and learn content while learning the two languages. The students spend 50 percent of their day in an all-English classroom and 50 percent of their day in an all-Spanish classroom.

If you have a rising kindergarten student interested in the dual language immersion program, applications are due by April 12, 2019 for the 2019-2020 school year. Students will be selected on a first come, first served basis. For applications received after April 12, students will be placed on a waiting list.
