Burke County Public Schools to Implement Wand Metal Detectors and Clear Bag Rules

MORGANTON, N.C. – As part of our ongoing commitment to school safety, starting with Patton High School’s home varsity game on Friday, Oct. 17, Burke County Public Schools will implement the use of handheld wand metal detectors at the entry gates. Starting next week, for all home high school JV and varsity football games, in addition to the wand detectors, BCPS will follow a clear bag only procedure. The clear bags and wands will also apply to middle school, JV and varsity basketball games for the upcoming basketball season in November. Next year, the measures will apply to all middle school football games, as well. Unless they are clear -- backpacks, purses, duffel bags and large totes are not allowed. Medical bags and diaper bags are allowed but are subject to inspection.

The goal is to provide a quick, respectful and effective screening process that enhances safety for students, athletes, staff and fans. The measures are preventive and are not in response to any specific incident or threat. BCPS recently received a $150,000 grant from the NC Center for Safety Schools to be used on safety equipment. BCPS used the resources to purchase the wand detectors, as well as door alarms, cameras, lockdown magnetic strips, keyless entries, walkie-talkies and stop-the-bleed kits.

Superintendent Dr. Mike Swan said, “Our top priority is the safety of everyone in our schools. The addition of wand detectors and other equipment is another proactive step to ensure we are doing everything possible to maintain secure and welcoming environments. The clear bag protocol helps our staff and law enforcement ensure that everyone entering our events can do so quickly and safely. We appreciate our community’s support as we continue prioritizing safety.”

What to Expect at the Athletic Event Gates:

  • Upon arrival, attendees will be asked to place metal belongings — such as keys, wallets and cell phones — in a basket/container before being screened with a handheld metal detector wand.
  • Please arrive early to allow time for screening before kickoff.
  • Follow staff directions and have metal items ready when you reach the gate to help keep lines moving smoothly.
  • Remember, these procedures are in place to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone attending our athletic events.
