Burke County Schools Educator Named National Educator of the Year

Discovery Education has named Burke County Public Schools educator Holly Thomas a 2026 Educator of the Year as part of the 2026 Discovery Education Awards program.

Thomas, an elementary instructional coach with Burke County Public Schools, was recognized for her innovative approach to science instruction and her commitment to fostering curiosity, collaboration, and confidence in students and teachers alike.

Rather than focusing on memorization, Thomas encourages students to observe, question, and explain real-world phenomena through inquiry-based learning and evidence-based reasoning. Her classrooms create an environment where students are encouraged to take intellectual risks, persist through challenges, and build confidence in understanding complex scientific concepts.

One example of her work highlighted by Discovery Education was an inquiry-based lesson on the water cycle, where students developed their own explanations for evaporation and precipitation through observation, discussion, and shared reasoning.

Beyond the classroom, Thomas supports educators across the district by modeling instruction, mentoring teachers, collaborating on curriculum development, and leading professional learning opportunities. Her leadership has helped strengthen science instruction throughout Burke County Public Schools.
