EBMS student has Youth Art Month Flag Design Awarded

Connelly Springs, NC — An eighth-grade student from East Burke Middle School has been named the Middle Division winner in the North Carolina Art Education Association's Youth Art Month Flag Design contest, a statewide competition that celebrates student creativity.

Each year, art educators from across North Carolina submit student-designed flag entries to the Youth Art Month Chair. The contest seeks designs that integrate elements representing North Carolina, visual art, the Youth Art Month logo, and the current year’s theme, The World Needs Art.

“That’s pretty cool because I didn't think that I was going to win at all, and I’m grateful that my work was chosen,” said Mya upon receiving the news. “I am excited to see the prize package and hopeful to buy bedazzling stuff from Blick because I really enjoy that.”

Mya’s art teacher, Jana Farris, expressed her pride in the accomplishment: “Mya had a fantastic idea and ran with it, the result was fantastic! This is an incredible achievement for a young artist, and I could not be more thrilled for her.”

Both will receive a prize package, including art supplies and a gift certificate, courtesy of Blick Art.

Congratulations to the following state winners:

Grand Prize: Casey K./ Teacher: Kasey Vandeboom

Elementary Winner: Phillip A./ Teacher: Allison Ellis

Middle Winner: Mya G./ Teacher: Jana Farris
