Local graduate’s illustrated books donated to libraries

Morganton, NC – Wednesday, Feb. 7 2024

A Freedom High School graduate’s illustrated books have found themselves on the shelves of Burke County Public Schools elementary school media centers, thanks to a generous donation from her parents.

Katie Kath is a 2007 graduate of Freedom and has a master’s degree in illustration from Savannah College of Art and Design. She has gone on to illustrate children’s books from authors such as Nikki Tate, Kelly Jones and Claudia Mills. Plus, Dr. Seuss. In 2013, Kath won a Society of Children’s Books Writers and Illustrators scholarship and contracted with Random-House, which republished the Dr. Seuss book “Come on Over to My House.” The Dr. Seuss estate picked Kath to illustrate the book, which is about how much kids from all over the world have in common with each other.

A chance meeting between Board of Education member Jane Sohovich and Kath’s mother led to Kath’s parents, Phil and Carolyn Kath, donating books featuring her illustrations to each of the district’s 14 elementary school media centers.

Kath has led workshops for school-aged students to share her love of illustrations and inspire the next generation.

Burke County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Mike Swan said, “It always warms my heart when a former student goes out and makes an impact on the world. Katie’s illustrations are beautiful and inspiring, and we are so grateful to her parents for this donation to our media centers. Katie is a great example of having a dream, setting goals, honing her talent and skill and becoming an accomplished artist in her field.

Kath’s illustrated books include “Come Over to My House” by Dr. Seuss, “Home Base” Nikki Tate, “Are You Ready to Hatch and Unusual Chicken” by Kelly Jones and The Nora Notebook Series by Claudia Mills.

Kath also illustrates magazines and literary media for children and is the artist for over 14 picture and middle grade books. She regularly works with publishing houses and educational companies, including Abrams, Highlights for Children, Penguin/Random House, Sadlier, The Friend, and Running Press Books.
